Dartmouth Castle

One of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. Dartmouth Castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth for over 600 years.
This fascinating complex of defences was begun in 1388 by John Hawley, privateering Mayor of Dartmouth

Beautiful Dartmouth...

Dartmouth was of strategic importance as a deep-water port for sailing vessels. The port was used as the sailing point for the Crusades of 1147 and 1190, andWarfleet Creek, close to Dartmouth Castle is supposed by some to be named for the vast fleets which assembled there. Dartmouth was a home of theRoyal Navy from the reign of Edward III and was twice surprised and sacked during the Hundred Years' War
