A SHORT HISTORY OF
DARTMOUTH BAPTIST CHURCH
IN DARTMOUTH & TOWNSTAL

There has been a Baptist community in Dartmouth for over 400 years, meeting together in the lower part of the town.  The Pilgrim Fathers were aided by the local Baptists before setting sail to America in 1620.

Thomas Newcomen, the inventor of the first practical steam engine for pumping water, was a teaching elder and lay preacher in the early Baptist church and he was the pastor from 1710 – 1730.

In the 1950s work was started on the new Townstal Estate at the top of the town.  Torquay District of Baptist Churches had been in discussions with Dartmouth Town Council to acquire a site for a Baptist Church on the new estate and agreement was reached for a site on Carey Road.

The church, named the Pearce Carey Memorial Church (known locally as Townstal Baptist Church) was opened on 14th July 1954.

In 1969 it was decided to close the old Dartmouth Baptist Church in town and it was sold in the late 1970s.  In 1988 the church in Townstal was renamed the Dartmouth Baptist Church.

In 1980 a Hall was added to the main church building which enabled the work of the church to be expanded.

In 1982 two adjoining blocks of 6 flats (12 in total) for ‘active elderly persons’ were built on an area of land at the side of the Church buildings facing  onto Ivatt Road.

In 2007 the church underwent a major refurbishment to bring it up to modern building standards, including disability access and a new purpose built kitchen.

We meet for worship every Sunday morning and at present  run a Lunch Club on Mondays, with our Toddler group and Coffee morning meeting on Wednesday mornings. You are warmly welcome to join us at any of these events.

We are also available for community groups and events to use our premises – some of the current users being the Dartmouth History Research Group, Thursday Ladies Club (former Dartmouth W.I.) and Polling Station for our area.
